What are, in your mind, two unique or interesting or different or noteworthy ways Instructional Design/Technology has been used in business & industry that you believe could be usefully applied to your own professional work? Explain.
The first idea that piqued my interest was the idea of a virual team. In the business realm, it is used for communication and pooling of resources from different geographical areas. Much of my music teaching, particularly in my choirs, is multicultural. There is so much cool music available that I am not aware of, but would love it if I could team up with teachers from not only other areas of the country, but also from other parts of the world. I think that this is a realistic opportunity for me, the trick will be in finding the connections. There would be some language barriers that possibly would have to be overcome, but it would be fun to have a video conference with a choir teacher from Venelzuela, or England, or just about anywhere else that music is sung.
The second idea was in the section of Rapid prototyping, which is the development of a working model of an instructional product that is used early in a project to assist in the analysis, design, development and evaluation of an istructional innovation (p179). What I like about it from a business perspective is the time that it could save, and how if the model is followed, it is much less likely to have time consuming revisions to the project. The development time is shortened, and the overall cycle time in the creation of the product is lessened. The issue that I would have from the educational perspective is that while it saves time, would it come at the cost of the actual learning?

It would be fun to sing with people from different areas of the world or have them teach you some traditional local music! You could get the whole class involved by using a CVIT room.

P.S. I like how you have everyone else blogs linked!
I also really liked your idea about teaming up with choir teachers from other countries using conferencing. I think it would be a really neat experience.
Comparing the business world to the education world isn't always easy. Saving time isn't my biggest concern as a teacher, but if I was paying someone hourly obviously I would want them to finish it sooner rather than later. However, efficiency is still a concern for educators. It is really difficult to cover all the benchmarks in an allotted amount of time when I might have to reteach something or have excess snow days or if computers go down, ...
The internet seems to be a great way to connect to people who are far away. As you pointed out with the virtual team concept you could communicate and learn from people from all over who taught the same subject as you. Nice point about Rapid prototyping. Sure it would be nice to have a model. But as teachers we know things may change from one year to the next. We may even tweak how we do something from hour to hour. It takes a lot of time to prepare lessons and they always need to be looked at and evaluated to make sure they are succeeding. Although it would be great if you could speed up the process without hurting the product.

--The language barrier is a problem. I have an idea. Ask your kids if they know anyone (friends, family) who speak another language and who might be willing to help you with e-mail or video conferencing. Most of the students I have had, and their families, are more than willing to share cultural traditions, stories, music, etc. if you ask them. (FYI I don’t have any formal music education or training, but I do have a growing collection of various French music from francophone countries if you’d like some artist names, songs or music company information.)
There is so much that teachers have to cover in the current curriculum that it is difficult to add anything new. While rapid prototyping would save time and money it is hard to figure out how to implement new things and make sure students are learning everything that they are supposed to.

I also that the virtual team was most interesting to me too. The idea of collaborating with other school teachers and administrators from around the world is very exciting to me. Now the networking technology is here, the virtual team is a real possibility, not something out of sci-fi movie. I didn't think about the language barrier as problem but I bet there are some affordable translation software out there... maybe. If not, a translator would be necessary.
